THE ROLE OF DUTY COMMANDANTS IN THE PROTECTION OF DIPLOMATIC MISSIONS: A COMPARATIVE LEGALANALYSIS ACROSS HOST STATES The protection of diplomatic missions constitutes a fundamental element of the international legal order and is grounded in the principle of inviolability of diplomatic premises. Article 22 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961 establishes the obligation of the receiving State to take all appropriate steps to protect the premises of a mission against intrusion or damage and to prevent any disturbance of the peace of the mission or impairment of its dignity.
