The study examines the process of formation and development of advocates’ unions in Southern Ukraine in the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The preconditions for the establishment of the Bar institution within the framework of the 1864 Judicial Reform are revealed. The structure, functions, and main directions of activity of advocates’ societies, councils, and collegia operating at the judicial chambers of Odesa, Mykolaiv, Kherson, and Katerynoslav are characterized. The role of advocates in shaping legal culture, promoting the ideas of legality, human rights, and the independence of the judiciary is analyzed. The significance of advocates’ associations in the development of public life and the formation of a national legal tradition in the Ukrainian lands is determined.
