The Armenian diaspora is one of the most stable and historically enduring diasporas in Eastern Europe. The presence of Armenians on the territory of modern Ukraine has been documented since the eleventh–thirteenth centuries and is primarily associated with the development of trade, crafts, and urban self-government. Contemporary historiography increasingly emphasizes the need to consider diasporas not only as cultural or confessional communities but also as active economic actors in urban development [6; 9]. The purpose of this article is to analyze the contribution of the Armenian diaspora to the economic history of Ukrainian cities on the basis of historiography and archival sources, as well as to place the Ukrainian case within a broader context of diaspora and urban studies. Historiographical Review. Early studies of Armenian communities in Ukrainian lands were predominantly descriptive and focused on the history of individual cities and church institutions. In works of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Armenians were viewed as an important element of the urban economy of Lviv, Kamianets-Podilskyi, and Crimea, primarily in the context of trade and crafts [4; 2]. During the Soviet period, the study of the Armenian diaspora was incorporated into the broader framework of national relations and ethnic processes. The economic role of diasporas was generally not highlighted separately; however, valuable demographic and socio-economic data were collected [1; 3]. A qualitative shift occurred in post-Soviet historiography.
